Tibet, earthquake to foster social reforms
As it is hisorically the case with most political systems that cannot be defined democracies, China is reacting in an autarchic fashion to social unrest and natural disasters; before conceding to dialogue with Tibet spirtual guides, China has stubbornly insisted on considering such unrest as an internal problem; aid from Us on rescuing victims frome earthquake has only been just accepted, probably too late. Economic development can only be sustained if social and enviromental issues are dealt with properly. If China does not deal quickly with social imbalances, at some points it wil have to face further more dramatic unrest, most likely from ethnic minorities or paesants, that still live on a dollar a day. Infrastractures such as the big dam on the Three Gorges have certainly increased the risk for natural calamities. History repeats itself and China will not be different from any other case of the past. |
